Re:Frustrated - 2010/01/24 20:13
My Husband, who is only 31 has been battling metastatic melanoma now for the last 2 years. After having two big operations in 2008 to remove tumours in his groin lymph nodes, small intestine & having 60% of his liver removed the Dr's were confident that they "got it all" with the surgery and that no other treatment would be needed, even though we asked for it. In April 2009, we had clear scans. Then by August only 4 months later we found lumps in both sides of his neck after having a scan, it showed that it had now spread to his neck lymph nodes, both lungs & back in his liver (what was left of it). We were referred to Prof. Rick Kefford leading Melanoma oncologist (there is only 4 in Australia) who gave us hope as he said my husband could be eligable to get on the GSK BRAF trial. After getting on the trial things were going ok, a scan at the start of December (just last month) showed that he had a global response to the treatment & that the tumours in his lungs & liver had decreased. Just 4 weeks later he was so so tired & the lumps on his neck started growing right beofre our eyes. After a scan, it showed that he was no longer responding to the treatment as the tumours that had decreased had now doubled in size & new ones had appeared everywhere in his body just about. They took him off the trial straight away & scheduled him to start stanard DTIC chemotherapy for the next week. Within in 3 days of finding that all out, he was in hospital getting his stomach drained from all the ascites (fluid caused by the cancer) drained from his stomach then they started the chemo straight away. The day after having his chemo he was sent home but was so sick vomitting , only a day later he was that sick he had to be hospitalised again. THis time, to get his pain & nausea under control and to make him as comfortable as possible. The Dr's havent given us an indication as to how much time he has left we actually dont want to know but all i can say is that it has taken him so quickly and to watch the man you love go through so much pain and suffering it is heartbreaking. He doesnt have much fight left in him although he has been so positive right up until this point we know that we are at the point we never ever wanted to be in. We have an 18 month old son who is our tower of strength and it breaks my husbands heart & my heart to know that he wont be able to watch him grow up and be the fun loving dad he is. This horrible agressive disease is breaking our hearts of all our families. WHen are they going to find a cure!
