Advice Wanted - CT Scans - 2010/02/19 20:02 I had a level 4 melanoma removed from my back last year. Fortunately the margins were clear and I just have to go in for follow-up every few months.

At my last follow-up appointment at the hospital the doctor said something about having full-body scans with my GP every 6 months. At the time I assumed he was talking about mole-checks but have since wondered whether he actually meant I should be having CT scans to monitor for metastases. The bean counters at the hospital have decided to leave my next appointment for an additional 3 months, making it 6 months between appointments (I am still supposed to be having 3-monthly follow-ups) and it seems my concerns are not important enough for a doctor from the hospital to respond to over the phone. My GP is wonderful but unsure of the protocols for monitoring melanoma.

Therefore I am asking those who have experience with the disease whether it is likely that I should be having regular CT scans to monitor for metastases. I am a 36-year-old mother of 3 beautiful boys who need me and I don't want to take ANY chances.

Re:Advice Wanted - CT Scans - 2010/02/22 05:31 Yes the doctor would have most likely been suggesting 6mthly CT scans to check for metastases. You might also want to asking for MRI's on the brain as well. Unfortunately, Melanoma likes the brain and lungs. CT's aren't very clear on the brain. See if you can get them to agree to 3 mthly checkups, bloods and scans. Check yourself for lumps and act promptly if you ever find one. You may also want to change your diet so as to become a walking talking health nut. By boosting your immune system. Research, inparticular if maybe having radiation to the area the mole was removed given that it was Level 4. Live a full life BUT get active on getting healthy, remaining healthy and getting some Melanoma Expert Advise. Sydney Melaoma Unit could be worth talking to. I'd ask what if any drugs/trials/treatments are being recommended or offered for Stage 1 Level 4 Melanoma Patients. Good Luck. Kelly Hay-Hartley
